Born on 2 October 1976 in Liverpool, England, Rooney is the daughter of actor and director Peter Rooney and his wife, actress and director Maureen O’Hara. She has two siblings, a brother and a sister.
Rooney attended the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art in London, graduating in 1998. She made her professional debut in the television series The Bill in 1999. She has since appeared in numerous television series, including Casualty, Holby City, and The Tudors.
In 2002, Rooney made her feature film debut in The Hours, starring alongside Meryl Streep, Nicole Kidman, and Julianne Moore. She went on to appear in The Constant Gardener (2005) and The Other Boleyn Girl (2008).
Rooney has been married to actor and director David Morrissey since 2001. The couple have two children.
