In addition to representing the United States at the World Men’s Championship, winning the National Championship in 2001 should have qualified Larway to compete at the 2001 United States Olympic Curling Trials but the entire team was deemed ineligible because, as a Canadian living in the United States, teammate Greg Romaniuk was eligible for the National Championship but not for the Olympics. Larway instead attempted to earn a spot at the Trials through the National Olympic Qualifier, which he gained entry to through the Washington State Regional Qualifier. But he had to miss the National Qualifier because it occurred at the same time as the 2001 World Men’s Championship. Larway, with fellow curler Rich Ruohonen acting as his attorney, filed a grievance with the United States Olympic Committee and the United States Curling Association asking to be admitted to the Olympic Trials. Through an arbitration process he was eventually offered and accepted an extra, seventh spot at the Olympic Trials.
He is a 1992 World Men’s bronze medallist and a four-times United States men’s curling champion (1989, 1992, 2001, 2004).
