Bobby Gimby was a Canadian composer, songwriter, and actor. He is best known for writing the iconic Canadian song “Ca-na-da”, which was used as the theme song for the 1967 Canadian Centennial celebrations. He also wrote the theme song for Expo 67, the theme song for the 1976 Summer Olympics in Montreal, and the theme song for the 1988 Winter Olympics in Calgary.
Gimby was born in Cabri, Saskatchewan, and began his career as a musician in the 1930s. He served in the Royal Canadian Air Force during World War II, and after the war he moved to Toronto and began writing and performing music. He wrote the theme song for the CBC’s Hockey Night in Canada in 1968, and his song “Ca-na-da” was adopted as the official Centennial song in 1967.
Gimby was also an actor, appearing in several films and television shows, including the CBC series The Forest Rangers. He was awarded the Order of Canada in 1967 for his contributions to Canadian music. He died in Toronto in 1998 at the age of 79.
